Wow! What a night!

13 09 2009

Thank you ALL for making the Opening Reception & Awards Presentation spectacular, inspiring and fun! Marylou and I are getting some much needed rest, so stay tuned for more thank you’s and acknowledgements!

Close to 100 residents, neighbors, family and friends attended the much-anticipated event of the year to find out whom among the 12 Finalists would receive top honors. The Clubhouse was transformed into a Gallery, and all attendees became judges for the night as they cast their “People’s Choice Vote” for their favorite photo they wished to see on the cover of the upcoming “Spirit of North Shore Beach” Photo Calendar 2010.

ALL WINNING & RUNNER UP PHOTOS announced! Click here…

Stephanie Brick from New Hope, PA wowed the crowd and took the vote with her stunning photo titled “Independence Day: The Spirit of Celebration”. Set against a dramatic Long Island Sound and sea cliff backdrop, the photo shows a celebratory crowd enjoying a nighttime Fourth of July fireworks display at Broadway Beach. Fireworks can be seen as far away as Port Jefferson and along the Connecticut horizon.

First Prize went to Howard Stevens from Rocky Point, Second Prize to Stephanie Brick from New Hope, PA and Third Prize to George Bambara from Staten Island and Rocky Point. In the Shutterbug Category (Ages 15 & under), First & Second Prizes went to Rachel Mannetta (Age 14) from Rocky Point, and Third Prize went to Claire Paetzel (Age 3) from Mattituck, NY.

The Runners Up were: Michelle Wacker from Rocky Point, Erica Pereira from Washington DC, Linda Jacobellis from Rocky Point, Marina & Dimitry (brother & sister) Rohrbach from West Hempstead, and Caroline Mugno from Avon, CT.

The Photo Calendar, which we had comped up samples of on display and already being considered a keepsake, features all twelve winning photographs, along with an Honorable Mentions section in the back showing all the remaining entries. Calendars are available NOW for very limited pre-sale, to be delivered in early December.

Here are just a few of the Photos from the Event!

File sizes

12 07 2009

Hi everyone,  We’re coming into crunch time.  We’ve had some inquiries about file sizes.  It appears that many who want to  enter the contest have cameras that only  have 5 mb capabilities.  We can take 5 mb file sizes.    For our under 15 age category,  Shutterbug- Kids’ cameras only have a 3 mb capability.  We’ll accept those too.

Don’t forget that we’re looking for photos for year round representation too not just summer.   Yes it is OK to use files from your archives.

Despite the drizzle we had a fantastic Photo Walkabout.  Sam Levitan, Alina Wilczynski and Marylou Stewart were on hand to give tips.   Photos on this page by Sam Levitan and Marylou Stewart.

North Shore Beach Photo Walkabout on June 25th @ 9am

24 06 2009

June 28, Sunday Morning, 9 – 11 am

Free & Open to All

Meeting Point: Broadway Beach

Route: We will walk from Broadway Beach to Hallock Landing Beach and back to Broadway via Soundview Drive. Pace will be slow with frequent stops for photo tips and photo taking. Approx. 3 miles.

“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeing new landscapes, but in having new eyes.” — Marcel Proust

Take a leisurely Sunday stroll with us as we explore the splendor of North Shore Beach with new eyes.

See how your perspective on nature, with the subtle changes in light and color, and man’s influence on the landscape can surprise and delight you when approached with an open mind. The world begins to speak a unique language of shapes, shadows and shimmering reflections when you are willing to slow your pace, quiet your mind and observe.

It doesn’t matter what kind of camera you have, all levels from beginner to advanced are welcome. Photo enthusiasts without cameras, and those thinking of buying a camera or wanting to know more about the camera you have, are ALL welcome to join in. Kids are especially invited. Don’t forget, we need entries for the Shutterbug category for kids under 15.

Photographer and Long Island native, Marylou Stewart will lead the walkabout. She has been living in Rocky Point for 9 years and has been photographing the Long Island waters since she took up her first camera at age 11. She will give us photo tips and tricks on the following topics:
• composing and framing your shot,
• working with changing and challenging light conditions,
• learning more about the manual settings on your camera
• finding out how different camera settings can create specific effects and moods,
• arranging found objects in creative ways to convey ideas or create thoughtful still-lifes,
• getting tips on how to take your photographs of friends and family to the next level by using different angles, perspectives and setups,
• learning ways to have more fun with your camera by experimenting with moving the camera during long exposures, taking photos without looking through the viewfinder and pointing the camera at the sun against silhouetted objects in the foreground, etc.

“Wandering re-establishes the original harmony which once existed between man and the universe.” — Anatole France

Marylou Stewart
You are hard-pressed to find Marylou without a camera (or two or three!) on any given outing. Stewart received a Degree in Photographic Technology from SUNY @ Farmingdale. After years of working in Advertising, Electronics/Government, in 1983 she began her position as Photographer, Media Services at Stony Brook University. She has photographed open heart surgeries, doctoral awards ceremonies, celebrity press conferences and special events, scientific research materials, portraits for annual reports, as well as local archeological dig specimens and dinosaur bones from Madagascar for National Geographic. Marylou also attended School of Visual Arts, received a Bachelor of Arts in Business Management at Empire State College and a Masters in Human Resource Management at Stony Brook University.

RSVP to alina@moonkissedmedia.com or just show up!

Looking forward to journeying with you Sunday!

Camera settings

5 06 2009

There are different settings  that effect the file sizes that can be set on your camera depending on what you are using your photos for.

For the photo contest it is best to make sure that your camera is set for the best detail.   There are two settings to pay attention to.  The first is the size of the file- pick the  “Large” size.  The second is compression.  Set that to  “Superfine” or “Fine” under your compression settings.  On some cameras maybe called “Image Quality”.  (Check your owners manual for their settings.)    You’ll find that the number of images you can get on a card will get smaller.  So if you have a 32mb card that came with the camera you’ll need to get a larger card.  I like to use the 2 GB cards.   They hold a lot of photos. When you got out it is always good to have a backup card and an extra battery for your camera on hand.

I always photograph at the highest settings.    You never know when you may want to enlarge a photo.   You can always reduce the file size to use for other things like a webpage or emails.  You can’t go the other way.   You’ll also fine the less compression of the photograph the better the colors, shadows and highlight details.

Some inspiring events

15 05 2009

Memorial Day is almost upon us!     We’re busy working on the photo contest!  Hope you are all out there getting some great photos to enter.   It is two and a half months until the deadline!
There’s some great events coming up at North Shore Beach that might inspire you.

May 23rd to May 25th our beautiful beach is open to everyone.  You don’t need to be a member to experience it.   Maybe you’ll catch some fun shots of sandcastle building, kite flying, or a sailor/boater in their first launch of the summer.

Heh remember the days of Drive-In Movies?  I do.  May 23rd they’re having a Drive-In Movie up at the clubhouse parking lot.  How cool is that.

May 24th- Hot Cars.  Bring your oldie or hot car to the clubhouse.  10 am to Noon.

May 30th is a pot luck picnic dinner at the clubhouse.  6pm.    Not sure if they’ll be any good photo-ops but I’m sure the food and company will be great.

June 14- Flag Day

June 21- Father’s Day Brunch

July 18- Annual Clambake.

July 25th- Photo contest deadline.

Check www.northshorebeach.com for more info on these events.

Photo Op- St. Patrick’s Day Parade

13 03 2009

The luck of the Irish for the photo contest could be found in our very own famous Rocky Point Parade.  It starts on Sunday the 15th in Miller Place at 1pm and ends up by Gracies on Broadway.   Look for people having fun marching in the parade and out.  Sometimes the best shots are what is behind you.  A close up of a shamrock face, the flags and the cheers.  Get creative using lower and higher angles.  Who knows…  we need a great photo for the March slot in the calendar.  It could be yours.

NSB Photo Contest Entry Forms available!

2 03 2009

A PDF of the NSB Photo Contest Entry Brochure is available for download on the CONTEST RULES page. If you’re considering submitting more than one photo, you can also download printable forms with mulitple ENTRY FORMS, ENTRY TAGS & MODEL RELEASE FORMS. Have fun! Pssst…spread the word…
